2 And He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. 3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. Matt 17:1

How do you get ready for Lent? Well, how did Jesus get His disciples ready for Lent, which is to say, for His passion? We know how He prepared His inner circle. Now after six days Jesus took ‘the Rock,’ James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves . . . to see on that Holy Mountain with their own eyes- light streaming out of His pores, so they would know who it was who later in that Olive Press would have blood squeezed out His pores. Luke 22:44 They saw with their own eyes His face shine like the sun so they would know who it was whose face would later be more marred than any man. Isaiah 52:14

What would we have done, if the Son of Man ascended to where He was before? John 6:62 What would we have done, if He had decided (fairly) to return to the ―form of God Phil 2:6 permanently, without pouring Himself out, Phil 2:7 and resuming His humiliation, coming down the glory of that mountain, lowly, and aiming for Jerusalem on our behalf? I can’t even go there.

So let us prepare for Lent the way those first disciples did. See Him on the mountain. God in a body! Almighty, uncontrollable, all present, all knowing, eternal, and holy. Holy! Totally alive and unbound from death and the sin that causes death. The Daystar and Light of the World, who lives in unapproachable light. God from God, light from light, with no beginning and no need. When we see who is on that mountain, and hear and believe the voice come out of the cloud, saying, "This one is My beloved son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!"- 6 and when, like the disciples when they heard it, we fall on our faces and are greatly afraid, we are prepared for Lent.

Then watch what Jesus does, or rather watch what He allows to be done to Him for love of you. 7 Jesus came and touched them and said, "arise, and stop being afraid." Why? How can they and we, with all our sins, stop being afraid under the Spirit’s cloud, the Father’s voice and the Son’s shining? 8 When they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. The Jew who huffed and hiked up that mountain with them. He did not ascend to where He was before. Not yet. Not until He was bound by space and time and skin and ropes and bars and nails and death and tomb. He did not ascend until He could take us with Him. That’s Lent. See Jesus. See the Cross. And see your sins go away.

In Jesus’ love,
